The COVID-19 pandemic changed our worlds.

From Seoul to Stockholm, the wave of sudden and dramatic changes in communities, work, social life, political order, and bodily regulation profoundly affected pre-existing social forces and relations. While certain changes were short-term and superficial, others were longer-lasting and of deeper significance. Radical new protocols of social distancing, remote working and learning, masking, isolation, and quarantining, conditioned certain political and social possibilities, while occluding others.  What are the prospects now for our post-COVID-19 societies? What has evolved and changed with political agency, community activism, resistance, protest, and mobilization throughout the pandemic and beyond? Living With the Pandemic brings together global scholars of political narratives as well as artists and community members to present their ideas and visions and to discuss the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on political societies. The event will include short presentations of academic work, dramatic readings, a viewing of the short film, ‘Songs of Isolation’, and the launch of the new book Narratives of Resistance in Everyday Lives and the Covid Crisis.

A drinks reception will follow.

The London-based French theatre company TAMISE EN SCENE is thrilled to present: “The Lark” (L’Alouette) by Jean Anouilh.

The play traces the life of Joan of Arc, from her modest beginnings in the French village of Domrémy to her tragic demise at the stake in Rouen.

Anouilh doesn’t intend to deliver a history lecture. Instead, he creates an immersive experience filled with surprises through the use of “mise en abyme”, everything we witness is theatre within theatre. Flashbacks, 4th wall breaking, and even an unexpected happy ending!

With scenes that seamlessly shift between humour and feeling, “The Lark,” written in the aftermath of World War II, resonates in a distinct manner in 2024.

While it may not enjoy the same frequency of staging as “Antigone,” “The Lark” surpasses it in terms of strength, poetry, and the subtlety that imbues the story.

Enfantillages (Childishness) is a play by French Swiss author Léonore Confino, directed by Alexiane Cazenave, with Laura Turcatti and David Meslet and produced by Perspective Productions.

Meet ELLE and LUI, a couple navigating the complexities of raising a non-verbal 7-year-old child. Between shattered dreams and secrets aspirations, this daring, humorous, and incisive narrative immerses us in the relentless battle that defines the daily existence of this couple. This vibrant production, teetering between poetry and a tough reality, presents a tragicomic exploration of contemporary and timeless dilemmas. Through the lens of familial, parental, and individual struggles, it confronts us with the poignant challenges these characters face, inviting reflection on pressing societal issues.

One last drink explores the unspoken burden of the “strong friend.” We’ve all heard that saying before “check on your strong friend” especially when another suicide hits the news. People suddenly begin to remember to check on their strong friends. One last drink shows how the person carrying the least bits of weakness and smiling through the most amount of pain isn’t strong, but they are hiding. In a world so fixated on romantic love, the play highlights the love between 4 friends and how sometimes no matter how powerful that love is, it just wasn’t enough to save their friend from the hands of suicide and depression.
