The Book of Blood: Human Writes

The Book of Blood explores issues relating to human rights and (dis)enfranchisement and aims to facilitate the spectator’s transition from passive witness to more actively contributing participant. Each visitor is invited to donate a drop of blood to be used as ink in the writing of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights into a thick, leather-bound book.

At the same time, local artists, members of community groups, and educational establishments will perform their own responses to cultural and social issues, adding to the creation of a colourful and celebratory event with echoes of age-old rituals of sacrifice and dedication.

LEIBNIZ hopes that engagement with the Book of Blood will further all participants’ understanding both of human rights and of the investment of performance in expressing and supporting these concerns. The company’s aim is the establishment of a continuing practice of collaboration and shared activity from which new concepts of ‘home’ and ‘belonging’ may emerge.

Founded by artistic directors Ernst Fischer and Helen Spackman in 2005, LEIBNIZ is a fluid collective of
international performers and artists with eclectic backgrounds in theatre, dance, butoh, live art, film, photography and fine art. Having worked together since 1995, Fischer & Spackman’s initial focus on gender issues and body politics has shifted to wider political concerns of migration, displacement and urban alienation.
