A Date with Carmen is the showcase of five new multilingual interpretations of the Carmen story, encompassing radio, dance, theatre and performance art. The result of an ongoing project bringing together companies from France, Georgia, Romania and the UK, the showcase takes place 20 – 23 September 2012 in Canterbury and London.
A quintessentially European story, Carmen is inspired by a Russian poem, written in French as a novella about a Spanish gypsy living across national borders, and adapted to become one of the world’s most performed operas which was first produced in London.
Our starting point was a newly commissioned adaptation of Mérimée’s novella by Saviana Stănescu and Kit Hesketh-Harvey. Each partner was then invited to re-imagine the story engaging through their expert art form and themes pertinent to them. This has given us a rich and original programme of startlingly different interpretations.
Green Wave have created a piece of performance art focused on the use of social media: http://carmen.greenwave.ge/?page=main
Radio Romania International looks at Carmen through the medium of radio drama, with strong emphasis on love, life and fate.
Théâtre Éphéméride and Moving Theatre have jointly commissioned a new stage play to be performed in French and English by a bilingual company.
Tbilisi Vaso Abashidze Music and Drama State Theatre are using choreo-drama to reflect a highly emotional and physical interpretation.
Moving Theatre have developed an interactive audio drama which will allow individual audience members to create and share their own version of the story.
The project has received support from the European Commission and the Arts Council.
This company has hired Chelsea Theatre’s Auditorium helping us to fund our community programmes
